Spanish for Mental Wellness

Spanish for Mental Wellness

Spanish for Mental Wellness (SMW) is a training program to improve mental health practitioners' Spanish language skills. Translators, interpreters, students, and other interested parties can also participate in the online training workshops.

Rooted in the concept of language justice, SMW is a training school founded in 2021 in Austin, Texas, by Wilfredo José Burgos-Matos, an educator who became interested in researching Spanish speakers and accessibility to mental health due to his own experience navigating the system in search for therapy and psychiatric services. SMW’s services have been used by practitioners in New York City, Austin, Texas, Los Angeles and San Francisco, California, St. Kitts and Nevis, Wisconsin, and Puerto Rico.

Wilfredo was a great instructor. He was kind, patient, understanding, and also really fun. What came across really just showed how knowledgeable he is. Throughout the workshop, there are many breaks where we're allowed to ask Wilfredo some questions and he managed to never leave anything unanswered. That is incredible and I applaud him for that.

Praise for SMW

I loved this workshop! Wilfredo was super entertaining and knew A LOT about the subject matter. I don't think there was a time during the workshop in which I was bored.
